What Supply Chain Management Actually Encompasses

Supply chain management encompasses all of the decisions and relationships involved in getting materials from their origin through all the transformation and logistics steps to the final customer. It includes supplier selection and management, procurement and purchasing, inbound logistics, inventory management, production planning and scheduling, outbound logistics and order fulfillment, and the information systems and relationships that coordinate all of these activities across the multiple organisations typically involved in getting a product from raw material to customer.

The supply chain management insight that most improved manufacturing and retail performance over the last three decades: the recognition that supply chain performance — the speed, reliability, and cost at which materials flow from source to customer — is a competitive capability that is as important to business success as product quality or marketing effectiveness. The company with an excellent product and a fragile, slow, or expensive supply chain will consistently be disadvantaged relative to a competitor with an equivalent product and a resilient, fast, cost-effective supply chain.

Supply Chain Design: The Trade-offs That Matter

Inventory Management Across the Supply Chain

The inventory management principle that most improves supply chain performance: the decoupling point, which is the location in the supply chain where the transition occurs from make-to-stock (producing in anticipation of demand) to make-to-order (producing in response to actual demand). Moving the decoupling point as far downstream as possible — holding inventory in its most flexible, most generic form and postponing customisation until customer demand is known — reduces the total inventory required to achieve a given service level.

The supply chain risk management discipline that most protects businesses from the disruptions that are an inevitable feature of global supply chains: the systematic identification and assessment of the risks embedded in every significant supply chain decision, combined with deliberate mitigation investments proportionate to the magnitude and probability of each identified risk. The supply chain that sources a critical component from a single supplier in a single geography has a concentrated risk that a cost analysis of supply chain alternatives may undervalue — because the cost analysis typically captures only the steady-state economics without capturing the expected cost of the disruption that concentrated sourcing makes more likely.
